Moving houses can be daunting and downright exhausting. But if you plan ahead and give yourself ample time to go through everything, moving can be a breeze.

Follow this ultimate guide on how to plan, organize, and pack for the big move.

Plan out your move.

  • Schedule your moving day. Reserve the day before that for last minute preparations, and the day after ti go through your belongings once you are in your new home.
  • Research moving companies and compare the services they offer. Get quotes from three to five companies. Book your top choice, and keep in mind the second one as your backup.
  • Keep a folder exclusively for your moving to do list, calendar of tasks, and moving related documents such as contracts with the moving company.
  • Schedule the disconnection of utilities, and change of address for mails, bills, and so on. Changing your address is best done a week or two before the move, while disconnecting utilities the day before, or on the morning of the move.

Ready your packing materials.

  • Gather up all your old boxes, baskets, and suitcases lying around the house, garage, and attic. Also, gather up whetever packing materials you have, such as tape, scissors, markers, and plastic wrap.
  • Scour your local liquor store and grocery for boxes they are willing to donate. Beer bottle boxes are especially great as they have handles for easier carrying.
  • Buy everything else you need at your local hardware store. Include immediate supplies you will need in your new house, such as light bulbs, cleaning materials, and extension cords.

Declutter.

  • Purge. Not just your closet, but the entire house. Be ruthless rather than sentimental in picking out everything you don't need or haven't been using for quite some time. Segregate then into piles thwt you will throw away, donate, and sell. Your local charity groups can benefit a lot from these items, and in many cases, they can even pick them up for you.
  • Consume the contents of your fridge, then defrost it. Also, go through whatever perishables you have in the pantry, as well as those that are expiring soon, and consume them as well.
  • Start packing those things that you won't be using this season, then move on to decorative items around the house.

Pack strategically.

  • Before getting caught up in the mess of boxes and clutter everywhere, pack an overnight bag containing clothes and toiletries for all members of the household, as well as a bag for essentials such as important documents, chargers, emergency supplies, paper plates, cups, and utensils, and so on. Also, pack cleaning supplies for your new home.
  • Label and number your boxes properly. State the contents and the room in which they belong in. This makes things easier for you to ensure everything is accounted for, and for the movers to unload boxes in the right areas.
  • If you want to do some major rearrangement of your things, pack by category instead of by rooms. For example, gather up all the books in your bedroom, living room, and home office, and pack them together.
  • Use smaller boxes and suitcases for heavy stuff so that they are easier to lug around, and leave the bigger boxes for lighter belongings.
  • Save on expenses and waste by using blankets, clothes, and socks to pack breakables like plates and glasses.
  • Pack your clothes as they are. Gather up clothes on their hangers and place them in a large garbage bag. As for everything in your drawers, leave them there and just wrap plastic cling wrap around the drawer so you can move it as is.
  • Take a picture of your appliances' and furnitures' electric wirings and attachments before dismantling them. Place all the easily lost small stuff like screws, adapters, and cords in a ziploc bag and tape that bag onto the correeponding furniture.
