Moving houses can be a daunting and downright exhausting experience- what from finding the perfect house to buy or rent, locating and transferring to a good school or workplace, and changing addresses for all your utilities, bills, and other mail.

And that’s just the beginning. Now, you have to hire movers, figure out how to start packing up your things, prepare for the actual move, and once you’re finally in your new home, you simply don’t have the energy to deal with everything else. Next thing you know, 6 months have passed and half of your things are still inside their packing boxes.
The thing is, this doesn’t have to be the case. For a lot of your moving related needs, there are certified professionals out there to make the job easier for you. If you plan things right, the only thing you’ll have left to focus on is packing your home (which you can also just hire out, but let’s be honest- you want to do this one yourself).

To help you out, we gathered some of the best packing tips from the pros, and wrote down a master checklist for packing your home in a breeze!

First, here are 10 awesome tips on how to pack for a move:

Tips
  1. Before you pack, declutter your house by setting aside everything you don’t use anymore or use very rarely
  2. Decide if you will pack items by category or by room
  3. Start packing the items you use the least, or those you don’t need to survive, such as books, DVDs, winter coats, and items in the attic
  4. Use blankets and clothes to pack breakables
  5. Make use of suitcases, large bags, baskets, and bins
  6. Pack heavy items in small boxes, and light items in large boxes
  7. Seal and plastic bottles, jars, and other items that may stain or spill
  8. Separate flammable, toxic, and explosive materials from the rest of your moving boxes
  9. Label everything- label the boxes by number, content, or room; and write down the contents of each box
  10. Set aside an essentials bag filled with overnight clothes, toiletries, emergency needs, medicine, and disposable utensils

Now before you start packing, you will definitely need packing materials. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you have everything you need in your home- unless you live in a hardware store, that is. While we highly encourage that you make the most out of what you have, you will inevitably need more than that, so it’s best to stock up beforehand. Here are the must-need packing essentials for any sort of move:
